Four Barrel Coffee has a unique identity that exudes a raw and industrial vibe. Their rustic ceramic tableware is a beautiful touch.

The American style of the interior is more substantial than flashy. There is a balance of contemporary polish with an understated lifestyle.

Four animal heads are on display, an atypical choice for a coffee shop that makes the place memorable.

Four Barrel Coffee is also deserving of praise for its brand building beyond the counter. Their site has hosted some coffee classes, some were free, and some required payment. They also run a charitable initiative to benefit under-served communities. Their efforts are more and better than what most coffee shops do.

The café has some outdoor seating and a bike parking area, which is a great practical and aesthetic touch.

Outdoor seating is great for reading and relaxing in the sun, the area is well lit, has a good view, and is situated in characterful Valencia.

The Mill

The Mill is a sister café to Four Barrel Coffee, sharing a parent company. Although the group has three locations, The Mill feels very different from Four Barrel. Walk in and the mood is immediately warmer and it has a home furnishing sensibility that softens the strong American design language. Wall partitions and other details also have a slight Japanese inspiration.

The space is impressively large for the neighborhood. It is situated next to Alamo Square which is known for the Seven Sisters buildings, and the DMV is just one block away.

It has real practicality and a sense of a landmark. The Mill features a baking area, located directly behind the cashier. Bread is its signature product, with a whole rack of various health-oriented loaves that many customers buy. Its signature dishes include freshly baked toast (and various cream cheeses), seasonal vegetable salads, and fruit. Simple food done exactly as it should be, and served warm. The outdoor area is not really a patio with tables but rather street-side seating. Once the coffee is finished, walking to Alamo Square is a nice way to stroll, take in the Seven Sisters houses, and catch some sun. Sextant Coffee Roasters While walking by, Sextant Coffee Roasters caught my attention first: it looks like a polished neighborhood café, and it’s a calm atmosphere with not many customers inside. A quick online search showed Wi-Fi, which is a huge plus as many coffee shops seem to be avoiding this. Fortunately, it's about a ten-minute walk from home so I can grab a coffee, catch up on emails really quickly, and take my time walking back. The café has a standard SoMa design: long and narrow, but is an adequate size. Customers can decide between sunshine and shade, with umbrellas set up in the backyard.

Although the shop had its own coffee equipment, it was still new on this visit and had not found its rhythm yet as an operation. The coffee was good and the latte art was nice. The selection of desserts was small, but it was enough to go with a coffee.

While the area around Sextant is not anything special, mainly with auto repair shops, there is a Costco in San Francisco, so it is a good place to stop for coffee while going shopping.

The visit was early on a weekend, so the café was very calm and nice. it might be good to come back on a weekday to see if it works for regular work sessions.
